The East London Community Land Trust launched its inaugural annual lecture on Wednesday 11th May 2011 at Bow Road Methodist Church. John Davis - a pioneer of the Community Land Trust model and Board Member of the Champlain Housing Trust in Vermont - gave a fascinating and insightful look at the history of the CLT movement. He was joined by Dev Goetschius, Executive Director of Housing Land Trust of Sonoma County (HLTSC).
John Emmeus Davis is widely regarded as the pre-eminent academic in the Community Land Trust field throughout the United States. He has worked as a Community Organizer and nonprofit Executive Director in East Tennessee, and as a technical assistance provider for community land trusts and other nonprofit community development organizations throughout the United States. He served for ten years as Housing Director for the City of Burlington, helping set up the Champlain Housing Trust, and as Coordinator for the Old North End Enterprise Community.
He is a partner and co-founder of Burlington Associates in Community Development LLC, an international consulting cooperative founded in 1993; has taught urban studies, housing policy, and neighborhood planning at the University of Vermont, New Hampshire College, and MIT; is a founding member of the faculty and board of the National CLT Academy, on which he presently serves as the Academy’s Dean. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
